We (co-workers and I) seem to have this conversation every couple of months. What defines a sport. Sgt K thinks NASCAR is a sport. I don't. I think physical exertion should be prerequisite. Yeah, I know, the drivers are pretty fatigued after the race. But they are exerting all the effort. If someone beats me up for three hours I'd be fatigued too. That doesn't mean that I was putting forth effort. If you take out the physical exertion, then all kinds of stuff could be considered sport. Like chess, and golf, and darts. Those are skill games, not sports.
Sports are the only reason I miss T.V. Football is over and March Madness is starting up. I do wish that I could watch a few games. But the benefits of not having cable still far outweigh a few missed games.

My husband, brother and dad have this conversation a lot. They all agree with you that NASCAR isn't a sport. I guess it all depends on who you ask :)
NASCAR... NOT a sport. :)
How far are you in to recruiting duty? We did our three years in Reno.
Heather-
We're just shy of 3 years out here.

It's hard to draw the line on what is and isn't a sport these days.
I don't see any great athletics involved in bowling. Yet they call that a sport. It's kinda like darts, exercise wise.
I just had this same conversation a couple of days ago with my friends. Sport, is also defined as competion done for fun, this defintion doesn't seem to work any better then any other, when was the last time you saw a pro athlete have any fun.
I don't know that physical excertion can be the only requirement though, because dancers and, rhythmic gymnists, definatly meet this requirement, but come on can any form of compitition that is completely based on judge's scores/opinions really be considered a sport.
You can't really turn to ESPN anymore for a valid definition, because everything is a sport to them, listen I like poker as much as the next guy but come on, a sport, and the reality is poker gets more airtime on ESPN then most any other "sport". Being in Hawaii its really hard to catch games during the weekdays because of the time difference, and during the NBA finals they had a World Series of poker Marathon going, I could catch the 2002 WSOP on ESPN from start to finish last year like four or five times over, but I was having a hard time just catching finals highlights.
Okay I got off subject, my point here is, the line between "sports" and games has been blurred, now that you can find a pro league for pretty much anything you can imagine, and ESPN will be more then happy to play it, cheerleading, darts, armwrestling, by the way chess is considered a sport, go figure. I guess we've gotten to the point were we need to specifically state that a sport is an, "Athletic" sport, let me ask you this what is Baseball an individual player may only have a couple of minutes of atheletic excertion total in a three our game, yet they have to being in excellent shape to make it to the bigs, well most do. Hey I love baseball its just a thought.
I don't know, but what I do know is I get a different answer for every person I talk to about this.
One more random thought, If driving a car is a sport, can I consider my drive to work PT, and if so, can I come in later.
