The after-school snack time is a much anticipated event around these parts. Eve starts her 20 questions about the after-school snack before school even starts for the day.
No pressure, Mama.
Sheesh.
Thankfully my children are easily satisfied. My favorite snack idea is popcorn. The kids love it and it never, ever becomes boring to them. I love popcorn because it is easy - throw a pot on the hot burner, dump in a little bit of oil, kernels in, wait for a pop, top on and away we go! A little melted butter, a little salt.. viola! Snack is served.
About a month ago I took some pictures of Eve and Judah inhaling their afternoon snack of popcorn. I love their interactions with each other - well, the non-screaming ones.
Who knew having kids could be this fun!
Can you help me out? Tell me in comments - what was (or is!) your favorite after-school snack?
This mama needs some fresh ideas thrown her way!
Looking so sweet. So innocent. Hangin' out like buddies...
And then the lesson starts: How to eat popcorn, by Eve...
Lesson two: How to steal popcorn, by Judah...
Lesson three: How to avoid having your popcorn stolen, by Eve

Love the last picture- too cute! Reminds me of my youngest ( :
Popcorn is a fairly regular after school snack at our house, too. Also, because we live in the Northwest, hot cocoa with marshmallows is a favorite during the winter months. I make the recipe on the back of the Hershey's powdered cocoa and have it waiting for the kids when they get home.
Other snacks we rotate are trail mix, saltine crackers with cream cheese or peanut butter (my kids especially like the mini saltines) and sometimes snickerdoodles or brownies with milk (if I've baked that day).
I'm interested to see some of the other ideas, too- I'll have to check back. . .
I just love your kids. I know they probably have their moments, but they seem to be the cutest, best behaved little kids!
The pictures are too cute!
Neither of my boys are old enough to start kindergarten yet, but we are regular snackers around here.
Apples and peanut butter, string cheese, yogurt, raisins, fruit, nuts/seeds...those are the kinds of snacks that we eat.
I love you :) And I love those kids. Eve's hair is beautiful, I havn't seen it since the hair cut picture. I love it.
I'd anticipate after school snacks if you were my mom too. No pressure though :)
Great pictures. You should try caramel corn or white chocolate popcorn for a twist....i admire you for still making it on the stove..i microwave. But I miss the taste of the ole fashion way....
Saltine crackers with peanut butter or jelly were popular when I was younger as was cream cheese on celery. My mom wasn't a big baker, but I am so since I am childless, my office reaps the rewards of my snack preparation - favorites here are cupcakes and brownies.
This is too funny! It's so true that Eve starts planning meals as soon as she pops her eyes open in the morning. You'd think she lived through a famine or great depression or something! Ha! And eating out of the bowl face first, tongue out.........well, that's the ONLY way to eat popcorn!
Mom
My son is only two but our snacks are usually fruits, string cheese, goldfish or wheatables (usually with hummus)
My kids aren't in school yet, but we love string cheese, any kind of fruit, and yogurt. My grandma always fixed popcorn and apple slices as a snack for us as kids (and still does!!).
Those pics are a)gorgeous - nice job! and b)cracking me up! Our favorite is popcorn too! But I'm pretty sure it's quite different. As in store bought already popped or microwaved all quick like. Sigh. I so totally admire you!
I don't have many healthy suggestions, as my mother was never home after school, and used to leave us some sort of junk (fruit snacks, granola bars loaded with sugar, etc.) for us.
But, I did enjoy celery and carrots or apples with peanut butter, which is a healthier option. :)
Homemade chex mix.
I just think your children are so stunning.
String cheese is big here!
I love lesson #3!! Maybe I should lick all the chocolate in my house...Do you think it'd work?!?
As far as after-school snacks from when I was in school was pretzels and fruit punch. I wasn't very creative...But i can remember getting home from school dumping my bag down and running to get the pretzels and fruit punch so I wouldn't miss Saved by the bell!!
When B gets home from school, he usually has a choice of popcorn, or one of the "fruit leathers" from stretch island (http://www.deliciousorganics.com)
well popcorn is for sure a good one, but i would have to say my all time favorite after school snack was animal crackers in a glass of milk. I would put just a couple crackers in at a time so they didn't all get soggy and wait until they were just soaked enough and then scoop them out with a spoon... man, i'm hungry now lol!
I forgot eve got her hair cut! It looks adorable!!
cute pics.
we do trail mixes that we mix ourselves. the fav right now is almonds chocolate chips and cranberries.
Popcorn is a favorite. We actually use a hot-air popcorn popper to avoid the butter and salt.
Also the usual: apples and pb, string cheese, almonds, raisins. Evyn LOVES edamame (we buy the PictSweet Steamers) and a friend of mine does frequent fruit smoothies. Granola and yogurt are also fun.
I'm loving Eve's haircut!!
Popcorn is a favorite around here too. But the combination of raisins and peanuts seems to take the prize in this house. Go figure.
My son comes home starving. Like he hasn't eaten in 24 hours. But he is 12 and apparently has a hollow leg. His favorite is a croissant sliced almost in half, a handful of chocolate chips tucked inside and then cooked until toasty and the chocolate chips are soft (about 5 minutes in the toaster oven). Not especially healthy I know...
my boys love big pretzels. Not really so big (but at 4 and two anything is big!). 30 seconds in the microwave and a yummy treat for all!
We also all love ritz crackers and cheese slices. mmmmmmmmm... cheese....
string cheese and go-gurts are big here... notice the individual, self-serve? also banana "sandwiches" (sliced banana with a little peanut butter in the middle). that's all i can think of right now. i was thrown by the pics; i had forgotten eve had a sassy new 'do. i love it!
Pretzels and Strawberry Cream Cheese, it is the best !
My daughters favorite was ants on a log (celery filled with Peanut butter and raisins on the P.B.
My favorite was saltine crackers with P.B. half a marshmellow on top and put under the broiler until the tops of the mashmellows are light brown. Now my daughter makes these herself too. I think i'm in the mood for an after school snack now.
* Sliced deli turkey and cream cheese roll-ups!
* Sliced banana with a little Hersheys chocolate syrup drizzled over top. Yummy!
My kiddos dig anything that I refer to as "trail mix"...so it leaves me with SO MANY options, and they are THRILLED at whatever new trail mix momma's able to come up with--sometimes it's almonds, raisins and carob chips, other times is oyster crackers, dried fruit bits and a few pretzels...the opportunities are really endless! :) another fav is "yogurt sundae's"....soy or whole milk yogurt in a bowl with whatever topping you have around--fruit, sprinkles (an all time favorite), carob chips. We do the same thing for breakfast somedays but with oatmeal instead. My kids dig toppings and dips, so another snack time staple around here is fruit dipped in peanut butter or honey or yogurt, and veggies with hummus, cream cheese or dressing.
After School snacks always cause an issue around here! They HAVE to have them right when they get home (no matter if it's 4:30!!)
We do animal crackers, or apples dipped in sour cream and brown sugar (a friend's suggestion), or in the spring/summer the fruit that is in season. Fruit salad or nuts are also very popular, but the nuts don't work for the little ones.
Now I'm getting hungry :)
I usually make myself a homemade granola/trail mix of some sort, homemade sorbet or fruit slush, or I toast rustic bread with fruit preserves and cinnamon. Sometimes I make plain white popcorn on the stove and sprinkle it with parmesan and garlic dash, or add in Red Hots and sprinkle it all with some salt. Then there's always the good old standby string cheese and apple, or thinly sliced ham rolled up with cream cheese, pickles and pickled asparagus. Delicious!
I think all our snacks were already mentioned, but I wanted to thank everyone for the great ideas!
And a.dor.abl. pics!
Judah! MMmmmm...LOVE that boy!
We have an asian store not too far that sells all kinds of different snacks. Gel sticks. Huge coconut chips. (They are to die for if you like coconut in the teeniest tiniest of ways!)
We make open-faced toasted cheese sandwiches under the broiler.
Little mini english muffin pizzas.
I also make a batch of the fruit dip that is just one box of fat-free cream cheese and one tall jar of marshmellow creme. I store it in the fridge and dole it out in a couple tablespoons at a time with fruit. They eat it like pigs to slop. (soo sorry, but they do)
I also have them pick one new fruit or veggie a week when we go to the grocery store. It has to be something we haven't ever tried. They love that to be a snack to see if it can be added to the list of Keepers or NOT.
Great post idea as usual Andrea!
